Basingstoke Under 13’s welcomed Romsey to Down Grange on a beautiful windy autumnal day. It was the boys first experience of playing a game in the cage, and the boys really enjoyed the experience.
Romsey were a little short on numbers being schools half term. Basingstoke also had seven players unavailable due to illness, injury & holidays. The game started with one Basingstoke player wearing the Romsey shirt (Charlie).
The first Quarter Romsey started well with the wind at their backs making multiple good backs moves all defended well by Basingstoke. Basingstoke started to stamp some authority on the game with some strong forwards play. With quick ball the backs were running great lines and it was no surprise this lead to three try’s in quick succession, with another following by the end of the quarter.
The second quarter started the same as the first, with Romsey having good possession and moving the ball well but with very little penetration against a strong and resilient Basingstoke defence. Good carries from the Basingstoke forwards led to two more home scores.
Romsey scored a quick breakaway try through Charlie playing for Romsey, which is how the half ended.
Basingstoke changed tem players for the second half with the wind at their backs it continued in the same way with multiple tries added. Injuries caused Basingstoke disruption, with players swapping positions multiple times in the second half.
As Romsey tired, Basingstoke lent extra players to Romsey, allowing for a more even ending to the fixture.
The game was played in a good spirit and followed the RFU's TREDS values superbly. Well done boys!
