Basingstoke U14s – Success at Hampshire trials
Basingstoke U14s are delighted to announce that 6 of their players have made it through to the county squad. Luke Buckner, Robbie Heywood, Eddie Mallaby, Chris May-Miller, Sean McDermott and Sean Tuohy all attended the gruelling 5 days of Hampshire trials that took place in November and December last year. Approximately 240 lads throughout Hampshire that had either been nominated through their clubs or schools, were initially narrowed down to 80 over 3 days, and then finally 45 were chosen to represent Hampshire over the last 2 days.
An additional bonus is that 2 of the players, Chris May-Miller and Sean Tuohy have also been enrolled on the Bronze Elite Player Development scheme at London Irish.

Four out of the five ladies made it through and are now a part of the Southern rugby team which is awesome. The total number of Hampshire junior ladies selected were 18 so to have just under a quarter of those chosen from Basingstoke is a wonderful achievement.

Academy win Weybridge Vandals Sevens

Despite being let down by only having a squad of 8 who turned up instead of 10 and that half the squad being heavily hung over from their night out with the Canadians touring side, Basingstoke still managed to win the Weybridge Vandals 7s Colts tournament!

We came top of the league and then after defeating Stourbridge in the semi-final, they capped the afternoon by demolishing Havant in the final 42-12. The boys were completely knackered and were playing on adrenalin in the semis and final.
Man of the tournament went to Dave Byett who only agreed to play at 8am that morning.

Squad - Dave Byett, Matt Buckland, Matt Guilfoyle, Simon Crew, Keiron Traynor, Stuart Angus, Tom Lynch, Dan Rees.

Back Row - David Byett,Simon Buckland,Rick Porter(Fitness Coach),Dan Rees,Kieron Traynor,Kevin Buckland(Team Manager)

Basingstoke RFC Schools U16 Festival

Well what a day!

Wednesday saw a tremendous turnout at the club for the Basingstoke RFC Schools Under 16 Festival.

The club was overrun with players from eight different schools from around Basingstoke including, Brighton Hill Sports College, Fort Hill School, Aldworth Science College, Costello Technology College, Cranbourne School, Robert Mays, Salesian College, and Bishop Challoner.

The three pool rounds were completed with Brighton Hill and Costello Technology College meeting in one semi final and Robert Mays and Bishop Challoner meeting in the other. After some fantastic moments the eventual finalists were decided. Brighton Hill and Bishop Challoner went head to head in a very exciting exhibition. Bishop Challoner took the lead early on in the first half scoring a try in the corner after some well-worked phases. The game was then taken away from Bishop Challoner midway through the second half by Brighton Hill’s Lewis Buttle. Buttle broke out from his own half beating a number of defenders to outpace the covering defence and score under the posts. The Basingstoke RFC and Hampshire Under 16 representative then converted his own try to win the game for Brighton Hill 7 – 5.

I would like to thank all the schools for their participation. It was a great day and I was especially happy to see Robert Mays do so well. As a school they have missed out on rugby participation for a number of years and did themselves and their school proud on the day. A big thank you to our community rugby sponsors Eli Lilly, Metaskill, Extend Technologies, and Rubicon. This is certainly just the start of some positive steps for rugby in Basingstoke and we as a club look forward to hosting events at the club for younger age groups in the near future.
