Stoke hammered. Old
Patesians 34 pts v Basingstoke 13 pts Stoke started brightly and soon took the lead with a Calder penalty but a sustained period of pressure on the B'stoke line resulted in a try for the right wing ,Pollok the home side full back missed the conversion near the posts. Stoke continued to press with Selwyn "Cowman" St Bernard making some surging runs, but there was nobody else to help him take on the home sides pack. Stoke regained the lead with another well struck penalty after 7 mins but "Pats" were soon back in front after strong forward play with a simple penalty by Pollok. The visitors probably had their best period of the match and a brilliant individual try by Fraser Jones out of nothing after 17 minutes was the highlight, Calder adding the points. But the Pats forwards were not to be denied and despite Pollok missing a simple penalty but he did convert another as Basingstoke continued to give away penalties and this resulted in Matt Evans being "yellow carded" and soon after Pats had their loose head prop Junior Venna binned as well. But on 40 mins Old Pats packed created enough space for Herman to go over, but the conversion was missed as well as a penalty on the stroke of half time. Half time Old Patesians 16 pts v Basingstoke 13pts Well if Stoke were to get back into this game they would need more fight from the forwards. Half time replacements of debut boy Ritchie McKinnie for Steve Buttle and Tom Dean, back from his wanderings, for Andy Byett would maybe do the trick but up the slope would be a tall order and soon Pats with former Gloucester boys No 8 Chris Raymond and Bruce Fenley at scrum half controlled the half. They increased their lead one minute into the half with a Pollok penalty and Fenley sneaked over for a try after 53 minutes converted by Pollok. The game slightly descended into a side show from the referee, who with the help of his touch judges binned a further three players for foul play, Raymond and Fenley for the home side and Della-Savina on for Simon Appleby for Stoke. Pats continued to press and a further penalty from Pollok and a try from replacement Pat Burford finished off the scoring. A poor performance, with the visitors pack soundly beaten. Work to be done before the visit of Westcombe Park. The injury and loss of Fraser Jones in the first half was also a worry.
NEXT GAME Saturday 14th September home to Westcombe Park,National 3 South.
